More and more students are coming to Bayreuth or Kulmbach to pursue their master's degrees. That is probably because the University aims to attract top researchers and provide its students with the best possible conditions in strategically selected subject areas. The University of Bayreuth is a tight-knight campus community, and it’s just the right size. You will come to appreciate our "flatter" hierarchies, our direct approach to communication, and having everything you need in one place. Everyone on campus is given the opportunity to contribute to the continual development of the University by getting involved in the University's decision-making process. How to apply for a master's programme?

To obtain a place on a master's degree programme, you will need to submit an application. The exact procedure may differ depending on the degree programme. 

Most master's programmes are designed to be consecutive and build on the content of a certain bachelor's programme. Information on this can be found in the examination regulations under admission requirements. Degrees from other universities are checked for comparability during the application process; and sometimes, missing course content can be made up for, to a limited extent, in the form of requirements stipulated at the beginning of the programme.

 If necessary, it is possible for you to apply even before receiving the bachelor's degree certificate. In this case, the certificate must be submitted within a certain period of time. The University of Bayreuth provides all students with the opportunity to complete supplementary programmes. You can also study individual modules. Students can select modules from our bachelor’s and master’s programmes and take the exam at the end. In addition, students of the University of Bayreuth can take course online via the Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern, which also offers a number of courses in English.

With supplementary studies, you immerse yourself in topics that have relevance beyond a single degree programme – for you, for your professional goals, and for our society. Supplementary studies are open to all students at the University of Bayreuth.

Module studies

In module studies, individual modules from bachelor's and master's programmes can be studied and completed with an examination. Further information and an overview of the modules offered can be found on the website of the Student Administration Office.

The Virtual University of Bavaria (vhb) is a network of Bavarian universities. It offers online courses as a supplement to face-to-face studies. Students of the University of Bayreuth can use the tutorial-supported courses of the vhb free of charge.
