Our scholarship holders

The University of Bayreuth is eager to nurture the new culture of scholarships developing in Germany. It creates enthusiastic and highly talented students, and establishes tight-knit networks of sponsors, alumni, students, and university. There is no better way to support the outstanding young talent of tomorrow.

"The social commitment of our current and former scholarship holders, who now number almost 240, is very important to us," says University President Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible. Scholarship holders supervise and teach junior students, take part in demanding international student competitions, and work as research assistants. Outside the University, they organize church youth camps and scout jamborees, lead the trombone choir, or teach German to refugees.

To illustrate, a few of our scholarship holders introduce themselves below. In the 2020/2021 winter semester, a total of 56 young people at the University of Bayreuth will be supported by a Deutschlandstipendium.

Scholarship holder voices

Tobias Bagdahn, B.Sc. Betriebswirtschaftslehre, B.Sc. Economics
Even before I began my studies, I was fascinated by economic systems and their   impact on society, politics, and businesses. That interest first led me to write an   empirical research paper for my Abitur seminar course on the market neutrality of   hedge funds. It ultimately inspired me to begin a dual degree in Business   Administration and Economics at the University of Bayreuth. Support through the Deutschlandstipendium gives me the opportunity to fully focus on this academic challenge without having to take on extensive part-time work for financial reasons. What I value most about the scholarship programme is the exchange with other motivated students, as well as the connection to supporting companies. This gives me the freedom to use my time to take on responsibility both at university and in the wider community. As head of the tennis division at the University Sport Club Bayreuth, I organize training sessions and match operations. I am also especially committed to my work with StudyTutors e. V., where I actively contribute to reducing educational inequality in Germany.

Pauline Böhm
Since my internship with a lawyer during school, I knew I wanted to study law. This led me to the next big question: which university is best for me? The University of Bayreuth quickly stood out with its beautiful campus, strong rankings, and numerous options for personalizing my studies. In my third semester, I chose to participate in a moot court (simulated court proceedings), where our entire team received extensive support from the university. The Deutschlandstipendium scholarship provided financial support for my travel expenses to the moot court. Additionally, it allowed me to connect with students from diverse fields through fellow scholarship holders, fostering connections that wouldn’t have been made otherwise.

Philipp Göhl, B.Sc. Angewandte Informatik
As part of my bachelor’s degree in Applied Computer Science, I combined computer   science with business as a minor subject because I am fascinated by the interface   between technology and business processes. I want to use IT in a targeted way to   improve efficiency in companies, and I was particularly drawn to IGZ Falkenberg   because it closely connects technological innovation with day-to-day operations in   warehousing, production, and transport through intelligent SAP solutions. The Deutschlandstipendium and the support from IGZ encourage me on this path by   providing financial security, valuable practical insights, and a strong network for both professional and personal exchange.

Philipp Herz, M.Sc. Polymer Science
Our world is facing many challenges, and chemistry plays a key role in addressing   them. Climate change, environmental pollution, and dwindling resources all call for   new ways of thinking and highlight the need for innovation. This forward-looking   mindset is also reflected in the chemistry departments at the University of Bayreuth,   which is why I chose to continue here after my bachelor’s degree and enrol in the   master’s programme in Polymer Science. I am very grateful for the support of the Deutschlandstipendium, as it allows me to fully concentrate on my research and coursework and to give my very best.

Philipp Herz, M.Sc. Polymer Science

Franziska Pfister, M.Sc. Biodiversität & Ökologie
The wild beauty of high mountain landscapes fascinates me not only on a scenic level, but above all from a scientific perspective. I am especially captivated by ecological relationships and by the question of how plant communities are able to survive in these extreme environments, caught between short growing seasons and harsh weather conditions. My greatest wish is to pursue a doctorate in plant ecology after completing my studies and to continue working in this field of research in the long term. The Deutschlandstipendium plays a crucial role in supporting me on this path: it gives me the financial freedom to become actively involved in research projects during my studies and to gain valuable practical experience. One of the absolute highlights for me was the opportunity to take part in a research expedition to the Himalayas, where we investigated various questions in disturbance ecology along the Annapurna Base Camp Trek.

Julius Schaller, B.Sc. Engineering Science
Climate change has long been a major concern for me. That is why I chose to study   Engineering Science with a focus on Energy Technology — so that, as an engineer, I   can help tackle this challenge. I chose the University of Bayreuth because I fell in love with its campus from my very first visit: short distances, a young start-up scene, and a sense of community that many other universities can only dream of. I believe that this interdisciplinary spirit and the close connection between bright young minds — fostered in part by the Deutschlandstipendium — are key to future success and can help contribute to solving what is perhaps humanity’s greatest challenge.

Julius Schaller, B.Sc. Engineering Science

Luca Zampa, B.Sc. Sportökonomie
Sport has been a passion of mine for many years, and in my bachelor’s degree in Sport, Business & Law I am able to combine that passion with business expertise. One of the highlights of my studies was my semester abroad in Philadelphia (USA), where I gained valuable international experience and met some amazing people. I am especially fascinated by sports management because it brings together strategy,   organization, and emotion in such a unique way. At the same time, I am also interested in business topics beyond the world of sport, which has already allowed me to gain some initial experience in consulting. The Deutschlandstipendium gives me the valuable opportunity to continue developing academically and to expand my network in both the sports and business sectors.
