Our scholarship holders

The University of Bayreuth is eager to nurture the new culture of scholarships developing in Germany. It creates enthusiastic and highly talented students, and establishes tight-knit networks of sponsors, alumni, students, and university. There is no better way to support the outstanding young talent of tomorrow.

"The social commitment of our current and former scholarship holders, who now number almost 240, is very important to us," says University President Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible. Scholarship holders supervise and teach junior students, take part in demanding international student competitions, and work as research assistants. Outside the University, they organize church youth camps and scout jamborees, lead the trombone choir, or teach German to refugees.

To illustrate, a few of our scholarship holders introduce themselves below. In the 2020/2021 winter semester, a total of 56 young people at the University of Bayreuth will be supported by a Deutschlandstipendium.

Sport is so much more than just exercise for me. Sport brings people of different cultural backgrounds together, sport means passion and gives strength, sport creates space for discourse, sport manages to unite society. Because these values are of great importance to me and I wanted to become part of this unique world, I decided to study Sport, Business & Law at the University of Bayreuth. As one of the first selected for the double degree programme with Ohio University, I also have the opportunity to understand sports management in an international context. The Deutschlandstipendium helps me stay focused despite this double workload, and allows me to exchange ideas with sponsors and fellow scholarship recipients.

I have been interested in the legal background of things ever since I trained as a tax clerk, so studying law was the logical next step for me. I chose the University of Bayreuth not only because of the excellent reputation of our University, but especially because of the interdisciplinary orientation of the faculty and the law programme in Bayreuth. This is demonstrated, among other things, by offers such as its additional training in economics for lawyers. This gives you the opportunity both to appreciate the bigger picture and to develop a profile for yourself. The additional training also provides you with a good understanding of the economic basis of the many subjects that are dealt with from a legal perspective, for example, in my major field of study, corporate and tax law. The Deutschlandstipendium gives me financial independence, which enables me to focus on my studies, and at the same time, still have time for other commitments outside of my studies. In addition, the Deutschlandstipendium offers me the opportunity to make interesting contacts with sponsors and fellow scholarship recipients.

The law degree programme at the University of Bayreuth stands out for, among other things, its interdisciplinarity, its encouragement of stays abroad, as well as the opportunity for personal development through student institutions, for example student legal advice. As a law student, the Deutschlandstipendium has increased my financial independence. During my stay in England at the University of Bristol, supported by the University of Bayreuth, I was able to take advantage of the full scope of advantages and opportunities of a master’s degree course abroad. And without the time constraints of a part-time job, I am able to pursue my commitment to pro-bono legal advice, and am a member of the Bristol Law Clinic. I will definitely contribute the practical and theoretical experience I gained during my LL.M. course back in Bayreuth in my conversations with fellow students, fellow scholars, and sponsors.

It is of great importance to me personally to preserve our remaining ecosystems for future generations, and to develop new economically and ecologically sound ways to shape our future. That’s why I decided to study geography in Bayreuth. The orientation of the University of Bayreuth and the Department of Geography enables me to explore a variety of ecological and economic, but also social scientific topics, all at the same time, and to put them into a spatio-temporal context. The support of the Deutschlandstipendium gives me the freedom to study and volunteer, as well as networking opportunities and good prospects for my academic and professional career.

Patricia Kappler, Stipendiatin Deutschlandstipendium an der Uni Bayreuth
Nature and the environment are of crucial importance to our lives and our future, and the need to protect them is increasingly being recognized in society. My aim is to contribute to the protection of the environment through my studies and subsequent work in research. That's why I chose the Master's degree course in Environmental Chemistry, which is both an international and interdisciplinary course. During my studies, I have already been able to gain many new professional and personal perspectives by exchanging ideas with fellow students and lecturers and finding out which area of environmental chemistry I am most interested in. The Deutschlandstipendium enables me to concentrate fully on my studies, gives me the opportunity to volunteer in the sustainability working group of the student parliament and helps me to plan my path after graduation. In addition to the enriching exchange with the sponsors on a professional and personal level, I have made very important and close friends through the Deutschlandstipendium.

What do we need physicists for today? To shape a sustainable future! The transformation of our society into a society is the task of the current generations. This transformation has two components, a social and a technical one. In this context, physicists are researching what is technically possible. At the University of Bayreuth, our research in experimental physics explores, among other things, material systems that have the potential to produce a new generation of solar cells. In this way, we are contributing to the development of another source of renewable energy. But mere research without industrial application will not create a more sustainable society. Thanks to its proximity to industry, the Deutschlandstipendium has shown me how companies think about basic research and what research can learn from companies in terms of the efficiency of work processes. I take these insights with me into my scientific work.

The increasingly complex globalization, the consideration of sustainable aspects and the progressive change of the working world through artificial intelligence are topics that every economist will have to deal with in their future professional life. The Business Administration degree program in Bayreuth provides numerous fundamental skills to deal with these topics in an economic context and to develop adequate solutions for various problems. In addition to financial support, the Deutschlandstipendium also offers the opportunity to build up a network from which you can benefit greatly in the future. This involves making valuable contacts with students from other faculties as well as with the sponsoring companies. With the help of this network, it is possible to find answers to the big questions of the future as a team.

Education is the key to success and prosperity. Many of us seem to take access to education for granted. But this is far from reality. There are hundreds of millions of children around the world who are unable to go to school or only achieve inadequate learning skills. We want to counteract this inequality of opportunity by founding the non-profit association "ProChildEdu e.V.". We firmly believe that improving educational opportunities not only increases the individual's quality of life, but can also improve many prevailing conflicts in the long term. The support of the Deutschlandstipendium enables me to concentrate 100% on my studies alongside my voluntary work for the organization.

"Gel hairstyle and polo shirt - I'm a business administration student!" Although my degree course has a certain reputation, I still decided to study for a Master's degree in Business Administration at the University of Bayreuth. There were various reasons for this: the individual support from the professors, the excellent infrastructure on campus and the large portfolio of specializations, especially in the field of business informatics. In addition to the network of scholarship holders and sponsors, the Deutschlandstipendium enabled me to attend an academic conference in Italy to present my first research project in the field of digital transformation.

Maxim Wenzel, Stipendiat Deutschlandstipendium an der Uni Bayreuth
I have always been fascinated by sport and technology. The combination of both areas offers enormous potential for improving athletic performance and preventing injuries. In the Master's degree program Sports Technology at the University of Bayreuth, I can combine my passion for innovation and sport in the best possible way. I am particularly interested in the development of new sports equipment and the integration of sensor technology into sports equipment in order to provide athletes with even better support. In the future, I would like to work in the development of sports technologies to make sport more efficient and exciting and would like to bring innovative ideas to market. The Deutschlandstipendium increases my financial security so that I can fully concentrate on my studies. It also gives me valuable networking opportunities with other scholarship holders and companies in the industry. These contacts are priceless for gaining practical insights and realizing my professional goals.

Since my internship with a lawyer during school, I knew I wanted to study law. This led me to the next big question: which university is best for me? The University of Bayreuth quickly stood out with its beautiful campus, strong rankings, and numerous options for personalizing my studies. In my third semester, I chose to participate in a moot court (simulated court proceedings), where our entire team received extensive support from the university. The Deutschlandstipendium scholarship provided financial support for my travel expenses to the moot court. Additionally, it allowed me to connect with students from diverse fields through fellow scholarship holders, fostering connections that wouldn’t have been made otherwise.

In a globalized world, understanding complex interrelationships is crucial to reducing inequalities and ensuring sustainable health and food security for all. The international and interdisciplinary Global Food, Nutrition & Health degree programme at the Kulmbach campus addresses these very topics, which led me to choose the University of Bayreuth for my studies. The university not only offers internationally oriented courses but also provides numerous opportunities for students to gain experience abroad. The Deutschlandstipendium scholarship allows me to engage in volunteer work alongside my studies, make valuable contacts, and take full advantage of the wide range of courses offered by the University of Bayreuth, including the opportunity to complete a supplementary programme

As a law student, I am particularly excited about the diverse career prospects after graduation. During my comprehensive legal training at the University of Bayreuth, I have not limited myself to a specific area, instead gaining a wealth of experience beyond my regular studies. For instance, I have participated in the largest international moot court in arbitration, completed a supplementary programme in economics, and published my first academic articles. The Deutschlandstipendium has enabled me to engage in these extracurricular activities and volunteer work related to social issues without losing focus on my studies. The opportunity to exchange ideas with other exceptional students in the programme is both motivating and inspiring.
