Intensive cooperation with Chinese universities

The University of Bayreuth has been continuously cooperating with Chinese universities in research and teaching for decades. The longest partnership with the Shanghai International Studies University (SISU) in the academic fields Intercultural German Studies and Economics dates back to 1986. At the heart of this strategic partnership are dual degree programmes with SISU and BIT. Moreover, SISU has also been the centre of our alumni network in China since 2012.

The University of Bayreuth’s Gateway Office in Shanghai

The University of Bayreuth’s Gateway Offices are designed to serve as contact points to support the exchange of Bayreuth’s students and instructors. They enhance cooperation in research and teaching, establish and maintain contact with institutions in science and industry, and manage the University of Bayreuth’s networks in their respective regions. On 8 April 2016, the University of Bayreuth opened its overseas office for China on the Hongkou Campus of SISU in downtown Shanghai.

A lively exchange of students and scholars.

In 1993, contact to Qingdao University in Shandong, Bavaria’s partner province in China, was established in German Language Studies. There has been a lively exchange of students and scholars between the University of Bayreuth and its Chinese partner universities ever since. Over the years, substantial academic collaborations in various disciplines have developed into a sustainable network of individual research contacts as well as an institutional network of more than ten partner universities in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Academic cooperation consists of research collaboration, dual degree programmes, joint short-term programmes, bachelor's, master's and doctoral programmes, and exchanges of researchers and doctoral fellows.

Successful internationalization.

Greater China is one of the focus regions of the University of Bayreuth’s internationalization strategy. For this reason, aside from its research and teaching activities, the University of Bayreuth has been represented at networking and recruitment events such as the China Education Expo and the PhD Workshop China for many years. Through these combined academic and administrative efforts, Chinese undergraduate and graduate students are now the biggest group of international students at the University of Bayreuth (25%). There are also a substantial number of Chinese PhD students and researchers on our campus.

The University of Bayreuth hosts the Bavarian Competence Centre for China (BAYCHINA) and cooperates with the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE).
