The University of Bayreuth’s Kulmbach Campus
"Decided and proclaimed: University of Bayreuth soon with university campus in Kulmbach" - with this press release, the University of Bayreuth announced its expansion plans in 2017. Meanwhile, at the Faculty of Life Sciences: Food, Nutrition & Health, based at the "Campus Kulmbach", research, teaching and learning is already taking place. For us, this is an occasion to look back at the beginnings of our Faculty of Life Sciences.
"There is a real win-win situation here: Both the university and the entire region of Upper Franconia will benefit from the new university offering," said Science Minister Bernd Sibler at the opening of the Faculty of Life Sciences: Food, Nutrition & Health in March 2019. Eventually, up to 1,000 young people will study in Kulmbach and more than 22 professorships will be established. Research questions include the causal relationships between disease risk and lifestyle, the influence of individual, cultural, or socio-economic factors on health, and the supply of healthy foods to people.
We would like to thank all the personalities who are currently committed to the founding and development of the Faculty at the Kulmbach location and who have already rendered outstanding services in the past, including Prof. Dr Stephan Clemens and the Honorary Senators Henry Schramm and Hans Albert Ruckdeschel.
University of Bayreuth in Kulmbach – the milestones
- June 2017: Decision of the Bavarian Council of Ministers to establish a seventh faculty at the University of Bayreuth with the title "Faculty of Life Sciences: Food, Nutrition & Health" with up to 1,000 students, 150 employees and more than 22 professorships at the Kulmbach site
- December 2017: The first dean, Prof. Dr. Stephan Clemens, and Managing Director Dr. Matthias Kaiser start work in the first faculty office in the gatehouse of the "Alte Spinnerei".
- July 2018: The Bavarian State Government approves the scientific concept and the roadmap for establishing the faculty.
- October 2018: Amendment of the University of Bayreuth’s constitution to regulate the establishment of its seventh faculty and move into the administrative building in Kulmbach.

- May 2020: The first professorship is filled.
- August 2020: Federal Minister of Nutrition Julia Klöckner visits the Faculty of Life Sciences: Food, Nutrition & Health.
- September 2020: The first student is enrolled in the Faculty of Life Sciences: Food, Nutrition & Health.
- October 2020: Introduction of the master's programme „Food Quality and Safety M.Sc.“
- November 2020: Start of teaching operations (under pandemic conditions); the Academy for New Media, KErn and the University of Bayreuth launch the "Nutrition Radar".
